An interesting way of propounding enlightened selfishness struck me in conversation last night, after the party. Give a decent man a fish, he'll eat for a day and give you something when you need it. Teach a decent man to fish, he'll eat for life, and teach you something when you need it. Give an average man a fish, he'll eat for a day and complain when you don't give him another tomorrow. Teach an average man to fish, and he'll whine if you don't teach him something else with more value and less effort involved.
