Gosh, it's been longer since I posted anything than I thought. This is what comes of being relatively productive, and possibly also of my house still being near-uninhabitable. Some months ago, kitchen renovation was started. It is still not done, nor does it look likely to be done in the near future. The granite countertops have turned out to be much more of a pain than anticipated, due to requiring specialist fitters. That part isn't a problem, the problem is when the other people say "it'll be ready for the granite by date X", and the granite guys are booked for X+2, and then they have to be cancelled because it is, in fact, not ready. Floor covered in wet adhesive, builder unexpectedly sodded off with the back door key (the only reasonable entrance for getting the granite in), things of that nature. On the other hand, having no kitchen at all, and being reduced to preparing food using only a kettle, a microwave and a toaster is an enjoyable flashback to being a student. "I'll get a takeaway curry," I thought, "there is a two for one deal so I'll microwave the second one tomorrow." Tomorrow comes, and I realise I don't have a bowl. The curry is in a foil container, so can't microwave it in that. Studently solution; a mug of curry. Bonus side effect - it actually microwaves better in a mug, done in a single pass rather than having to stir half way as you do with a bowl, so I'll be doing that in future. Anyway, the life-update part of the post is just padding, designed to bore you into being more easily amused by this: an xkcd comic that I repaired. [13:51] |

And how long have you been in this house? |
RavenBlack |
I've been living here nearly a year, but the kitchen's only been being done for, as the post said, "some months". |
Shamelessly Sinful |
Are all the other rooms done or nearly so? |
RavenBlack |
No. They were all okay before, but they've all been wrecked now by having the electrics done. |
Shamelessly Sinful |
Poor Raven. I feel for you. I've been moved around quite a bit in my relatively short life and understand the pains of renovating a house. And I don't mean to pry, but where in the United States did you live before you moved? |
RavenBlack |
Maryland and Virginia. |
Shamelessly Sinful |
Ah. The east coast. Coincidently, that's my favorite coast because it seems less fake than its western counterpart. Also, the mountains in Virginia are quite beautiful. I don't remember much about Maryland... |

Upon further exploration of your site, I discovered a certain picture that is... ahem... associated with the Creep. I hope you understand what I meant by that. Anyway, whatever happened to "(apart from those bits which I don't think I'm allowed to show in photos... And I'm not going to describe those bits, no matter how tempting it is)"? Dear me, did you give in to temptation, Raven? |
RavenBlack |
There is no such thing visible in any photo. |
Shamelessly Sinful |
I think your bum counts, but that's just me. |
Shamelessly Sinful |
Actually, I take back that comment. You're alluding to naughty bits, which is much more intriguing than baring it all. Bah, forget I said anything. Did you travel while in the United States? |
RavenBlack |
A bit. Atlanta was alright, San Francisco seemed alright briefly then was tremendously annoying, New England seemed okay, New York was nice if you like that sort of thing which I don't. |
Shamelessly Sinful |
Never been to Atlanta myself, but I'm going to try to catch a ride there sometime. California seems annoying in general, so it's the last state on my list to visit. New England is probably my favorite of the ones you mentioned. It has an older feel and that makes me feel more at home. New York was okay, but it overloaded my senses of bit. Have you ever been to the deep South? Louisiana and the like? |
RavenBlack |
No, but the deep south is scary by all accounts. (And similar to the outskirts of Atlanta, which wasn't good.) |
Shamelessly Sinful |
Most of the Deep South was indeed scary, but it was also quite fun. I loved New Orleans (post Katrina, of course). It was so bright and loud and friendly. Usually, I hate big cities, but there was something different about this one. I haven't been to it since the hurricane, so I'm not sure if I'd recommend it anymore, but back then I was just ranting about it. Quite the vacation spot if you ask me... And even the small towns between the big cities were amazing. I explored the bogs and swamps and bayous. Amazing. Truly amazing. Well, if you don't mine getting a bit (very) dirty, that is. |

Mmm I can relate to that one! I had a Kettle, one ring of a cooker and a grill that rubbish... Student kitchens eh? We lived on beer mostly, so the kitchen was for storing the cold ones ;) Andy |
