A scary lump on my hand, helpfully diagnosed in under 30 seconds by webmd.com as a ganglion. "Smashing a ganglion with a heavy object is not recommended because it usually does not work and may cause injury." [06:00]

Tom
Damn. The webmd thinks I am probably dead. What a bastard.

You never said whether you did smash your ganglion with a heavy obect or not. I think it's only a good idea if you are filming it.

Spiff
The WebMD is full of web-B.S.
I've smashed hundreds of ganglions and suffered no permanent ill-effect. My heavy object of choice has been the edge of my kitchen counter top. I am right now completely ganglion free, and I smoke privet leaves thinking they are pot.

RavenBlack
Well it doesn't say it *always* doesn't work, and it doesn't say it will cause *permanent* injury.

QuickSlash
...I had one in my wrist and the real MD told me to smash it with a phone book. That failed miserably and the ganglion ended up just disappearing on its own.

SpasmodicMonk
I have had many Ganglions, when I was a child that is, especially in my left hand. I don't know why that was. They always targetted my left hand. They usually went away on their own after a while but I couldn't help but feel that I had been made somehow less than human by their very presence. Do you feel this way? Not that it matters, it will probably bugger off on its own. Or you can smash it. I never tried that, although I expect it hurts quite alot. Do let me know.

Khandi
I have a huge ganglion over my left eye, and a (barely) smaller one over my right eye. They've been there for 2 weeks, my doctor hopes they'll shrink and go away. I hope I will be found innocent by reason of insanity when my doctor and his cronies disappear after I talk to him him for the last time.
I'm not actually making a threat, but sinus pain is only understood by the people who have experienced it.

Barbara
Man - I tell you whut... a friend of mine noticed the ganglion on the underside of my left wrist (the size of a ping-pong ball) - and I am terminally left-handed, so EVERYONE noticed and asked about it - and he suggested I go home and whack it with a heavy book. I don't own any heavy books, so if the mountain won't come to Mohammed - well - you know... So I whacked my wrist on the top of a heavy desk. Poof! All gone. Totally, completely, ALL gone! If I die from a Traveling Ganglion Clot, somebody feed my cats...

Barbara
P.s. Whacking my wrist did not hurt at all. Rubbing alcohol on an open cut hurts. Getting privet leaf schnibbles caught in delicate lung tissue hurts. This hurt about as much as opening a pop top on a can. But I didn't have to whack it very hard. Maybe there are people qith thick ganglion sheathes, but I imagine it's a lot like de-flowering a virgin (for the virgin, I mean) - it doesn't generally hurt a bit. Peace to y'all!

JODO
I have a ganglion, have had it for three'ish years now. Going crazy that it won't go away... So now I have a specialist appointment to possibly have it removed surgically. This scares me more than the damn bump! Lol/. Anyways I was wondering do I put the bluntest point of the book on my bump or over the entire wrist? I am getting desperate before this appointment comes up so I thought I try the pain smashing wrist thing. :) Any helps would help

Geoff
LISTEN here: I had a nice ganglion on my left hand... Was bothering the hell out of me, restricting hand motion. Doc said I had to get it SURGICALLY REMOVED. It was just a few days away when my friend SMASHED my hand during basketball. It was INSTANTLY GONE. No pain, no nothing. Done. I recommend lightly smashing any ganglion just don't kill yourself :)

Geoff
As for JODO I recommend you use the flat side of the book. No need to puncture with extreme pressure, it just needs a little *smash* start lightly lol/. Shoudln't require too much force at all

I only moments ago had my ganglion on the top of my wrist smashed. I put my hand down on the kitchen counter and had my boyfriend smash it with the heaviest book in the shelf. It barely hurt and it was instantly deflated. I then massaged it a bit to disperse what was in there. Now my wrist looks as if no lump was EVER there! I have been to the doctor to have it drained 5 times over the past few years and I have never EVER had results this good leaving the Dr. office The procedure there seems to take about a 1/2 and hour including getting stuck with needles to numb the area and followed by big needles to drain the cyst. Smashing it with a book is 500% easier, nearly painless and effective. I HIGHLY recommend doing it. Just make sure that you understand where the central point of the cyst is and whack the top of it with a decisive blow. Im so thrilled to see its GONE!! Good luck.

leanne
i tried to hit it with a book but it didnt work and i read some of these comments and tried hitting it on the side of the bench and it went down a little and after a few minites it was gone and with NO pain.

gemma
my ganglion was on my wrist for 2 years, i de ided to go 2 docs and see i then got refered to orthopedics, had tried the books trick and squeezing it quite hard . one night i was in bed and i tried biting it, poof it disappeared, hurt a little but its gone, wondered wether popping it would do any harm as the jelly/fulid will now be floating in my body!

Ghoul
i have a big ass ganglion on my wrist im gonna smash that shit right now and let you know what happend.. i smashed that shit hard like 20 times and its still there.. and it hurts. mines a beast though.

Shamus
Damn funny Ghoul! haha/, no, but really, I had a RARE form of ganglion behind my knee for nearly a year. The size of a golfball! Lots of pressure on my ligaments when my leg was straight and stretched. Had it drained, and it was back in like 3 months, but I couldnt get it drained again, it got under alot of pressure, and the next day, it was just gone! GONE! I read that smashing it usually causes it to return, did it return with any of you? I think mine just burst, or leaked under pressure. I dont recommend draining, is it just prolongs the pressure/burst effect. (with me atleast)

shamus
oh,khandi, I'm not a doctor, but to the best of my medical understanding, Ganglions form in joints, I am not a doctor, but I dont believe those cycst by your eyes to be ganglions. They could be just regular cycsts.

suffering
has any1 had a ganglion cyst the size of a golf ball go away after being smashed?

bigwuss
Thanks peeps, after more than 3 years walking arround with a marble sized ganglion on my left hand I finally had the guts to smash it. I just did it and it's gone now. Feels a bit weird but does not hurt.

neil
had a ganglion on the inside of my wrist for two the last two months. doc said just leave it it would go by its self
i was just looking at your comments about hitting it with a book, so i did, its now gone only hurts for a few seconds.

Brandon
iv had a marble size ganglion on my right wrist got it drained and injected with steroids.... its been three months and the damn thing has come back :-( reading this forum has given me some hope. seriously guys does it hurt when you hit it and where does the fluid go and does it continue to leak ????

RavenBlack
It hurts the same as hitting yourself with a book generally does.

I believe the reason it comes back if it's drained is that it forms from something being blocked, so the fluid just builds back up in the blockage - if you smash it, on the other hand (ha ha), the blockage is broken as well so it shouldn't return. Don't know what the steroid injection would be for, but I guess that was supposed to unswell the blockage so it could be moved along by the body.

I have a similar lump in my other forearm (which is a bit odd since it's not on a joint, but it really seems to be the same thing), but I can't smash that one because it's under a fleshy part and over the small bone.

sarah
i have a very very painful ganglion on my left wrist and just touching it slightly hurts alot...... should i try the heavy object trick and give it a whack?

RavenBlack
I don't think ganglions generally hurt from contact, so that might be something else.

sarah
thanks for that.... got a doctors appointment in the morning and will let you know the outcome.....maybe i will take 'the bible' with me just incase!

Nameless
Not just 1 ganglion but 3!!! im desperate and in so much pain!!! The doctor i saw has refered me to a specialist but may take several months to be seen! Keep looking at the very large bible we have ......iv also been looking at bible bashing techniques on 'You Tube'. Any thoughts......shall i just go for it?

sarah
After 2 attempts with the largest book my mother could find...... ITS GONE!!!!! After the second whack it hurt like mad but the pain gradually reduced after several hours. The lump has been getting smaller and less painful daily......and now 5 days later there is no lump and no pain!!! My advice to anybody with a very painful ganglion is - Give it a good whack!!! Thanks everybody!!!

gillian
hey, i've had a ping pong sized ganglion cyst for a couple of years on the top part of my left wrist, sometimes painful, but not most of the time. mostly just hate the way it looks. friends say they don't notice it, but that's what they're supposed to say. just really sick of it, and wanna really just smash the fuck out of that mo' fo'. however. my doctor and chiropractor said that that would possibly paralyze my hand from the impact of the cyst on certain nerves in my wrist...have any of you been paralyzed/known anyone who has been paralyzed due to smashing? thanks.

Ashley
I got my first ganglion two days ago and didn't know what the hell it was. I let it go for one day and then I googled it because it got bigger and a little painful. As soon as I saw you had to smash it I grabbed a textbook and told my dad to hit it. He bent my wrist a little bit to make sure he could get the perfect angle and smacked it. It was gone instantly. That was yesterday, and there is absolutely no bump and no pain. There was pain when he smacked me, but it wasn't that bad considering he was hitting me with a book. My dad was absolutely astounded how it disappeared INSTANTLY. For anyone with ganglions, I say smash it.
