Why is it that microwave food always says to pierce the plastic wrap before cooking? I have experimented with this by, well, not doing, and it results in pretty much what I predicted; the plastic container inflates, eventually the pressure causes it to rupture, at which point it is exactly the same as if I had pierced it in advance. So why should I waste my time with a fork or knife? My working theory is that it's similar to the now legendary McDonalds' "danger, danger, Will Robinson - coffee is hot" labelling; if they didn't do it, somebody would manage to microwave something just enough that the container didn't rupture, and then would open it with their eye right next to it, and be surprised by the sudden expulsion of steam. Or perhaps they would open it with their mouth.
