Comments on Saturday 16 March 2002:
Criminy. Resident Evil is really rather a good movie. Astoundingly so. Not astoundingly good, but astounding that it is good. I had expected it to be so horrible as to be funny. It had all the signs; movie from a computer game, zombies, and directed by the same guy as Mortal Kombat. But no, instead of being so atrocious as to be funny, it was good and funny. Only two negative comments from me - the "bang, made you jump" factor was a little high, and there were two or three pairs of lookalike characters. Other than those, and causing my wife to leave the cinema by making her jump and eating her brains, it was really quite low on flaws. While there wasn't a lot of plot, there was a lot more than I expected, and nicely cohesive, with both foreshadowing and backreferencing. In a lot of ways, the movie it most reminded me of was Cube - if you disliked Cube, I think you would probably dislike this. The converse doesn't necessarily apply (my wife liked Cube), but if you liked Cube and you like horror movies, then Resident Evil is probably a good bet. I'm not sure about the acting (it's hard to tell in action movies), but the cinematography was really very good. To summarise: gore, zombies, nudity, zombies, guns, burning zombies, explosions, zombies, jumpy kicking, zombie dogs, evil computers, zombie monsters, magical traps, and double zombie zombies. For a brief second, I thought you made your wife leave the cinema by eating her brains. At any rate I agree with your 'rather good' rating. (BTW, now that you live in America, use 'very' instead of 'rather' or 'quite', hee hee). I can say for a fact that this is the best VG to RL movie I've seen in a long time. Usually American production companies pander to the lowest common denominator

Ack, I clicked sumbit my accident. Usually companies get the liscence first and make the game after, these guys put alot of work into the back story, including the humor )

i can smell your brains

Hah. I'm glad i am not the only one who has bad facial recognition skills. With LOTR I had to content myself with going 'Which one is he? Ah, he's wearing more reddish clothes. Boromir, then. i think.'

I'm quietly delighted that not only I see similar-lookingness to be a low-point of something.

Unless you're cavorting with identical twins, in a mirror-wall room full of ice-cream and sherbert.

Hmmm... I'm not sure if I want to see it or not. It sounds interesting, but Harte, John, and Maeve said I shouldn't see it. I really don't like zombies (especially when they're winning) and have big issues with drowning. I was told that there were both of these aspects in the movie and I probably wouldn't enjoy watching it. But at the same time, part of me really wants to mess with my own head. And I did like Cube and I love horror movies (except for ones with zombies).

Your article was responsible of a dream in which both zombies and the girl I was chatting to while reading your article appeared. The girl herself was a zombie, too. It was an insanely realistic dream. Funny, though!

Actors playing Boromir, and Aragorn are both well known in this country (UK/England/Britain, wherever I live). They are; Sean Bean, and Some Bloke, respectivly. Some Bloke is wanna them not famous enough to be anything more than "The bloke from....". The upshot is, it made it much easier to tell them apart. Because instead of refering to boromir or aragorn, we Britain based products could refer to them as "Him from Goldeneye, and him from that crap action film the other night".

PLus we have the advandtage of being able to tell the diffrence between the accents.

I might (to my peril) point out that they where meant to look alike, seieng as they are of the same kin. Or at least from the same town. I asure you that people in England, when from the same town as each other, look the same. Liverpool is proof of this. Look at the beatles.

eperdu's icon on the list-of-"friends"-type-thing is a Moomin-like creature! or at least looks like something out of Moomin Valley. please tell me i'm not alone in my Tove Jansson worship.

Tabbie
I haven't read any of them yet, but my fiancee's mom gave me the entire set for my birthday 2 weeks ago. It was something from his childhood in England.

Ellimac
they're wonderful. if i recall rightly, they were originally bedtime stories she made up to tell to her brother. or something. i can't remember now. but they really are a lot of fun.

moominmolly
no! you're not alone in your tove jansson worship. eee! they are very silly books; definitely worth reading.

Cube was amazing. If you compared Resident Evil to Cube then I'll go see it. And the only way Boromir and Aragorn were alike was in their long hair and their apparent, very subtle competition for dominance among those gathered in the fellowship of the ring. So it's more like two personalities that clash annoyingly so... imo.

RavenBlack
I think hair is one of the things I use most for facial recognition. And that's not the only way Boromir and Aragorn were visually similar. They had similar noses, similar expressions, and similar voices. Which set of features covers almost the entirety of my identification repertoire. Two of the hobbits had the same identification issues, but they were minor enough that getting them mixed up didn't really matter.
