Comments on Monday 4 March 2002:
How does money get into useful circulation? To clarify the question, I'll explain the train of thought that led to it. I was wondering how workable it would be for a town to form around night people - such that all the shops would be open at night, and so forth. Which is to say, everyone works at night, farmers and all. I pondered what happens if the town is self-sufficient - at first glance, it would appear to be a simple construct. The problem is taxes - about 60% (apparently) of all the money in the town, each year, would end up in the grubby mitts of the government. How does that money get back into the town? Extend the scenario to apply to a normal city, and thence comes the question. I know some money comes in from the government-employees spending, but does that mean it's not possible to sustain a city that doesn't cater to government people? Feh. [15:34]

Well, supposedly all tax money should pay for things for the people. Things like roads, medicare, social security, education... In each instance, that service is provided by someone and that someone puts it back into circulation. (The county hires a contractor to build a road. That company buys supplies and pays it's employees and such.)

I've always liked the idea of a night town. One where you can get your car fixed at 3am if you need it. Or go to Borders at 4:30 because you're bored. At one point I thought that a dual society would work well but then I worried about it becoming one more thing to be prejudiced about. "You night-person, you!"

But besides that I think it could work. Night people towns and maybe even a tax break. The only reason a lot of places aren't open 24 hours yet is because there's no demand. But if you create the society, the demand will inevitably follow. Then when everything is open 24 hours, you have increased jobs, more people coming over to "the dark side" (had to say it, sorry). I think it would work if people weren't so stupid in general. /rant

Bleh, just re-read that. I didn't realize how tired I am until that point. Bah! I hate being awake when it's light out.

seems like a meritable idea, and i agree that in an instance where demand for a 'night town' rose that sufficient circulatory (to the people-> to the government {the 'other people'} -> to the people once more) income would develop, and quite possibly expand into a profitable veture (considering the notion that americans are very engrossed with trendistic journeys), and im sure the crowds would roll in from all over to visit the fabled 'night city'. This would provide more than enough capital to sustain life for the elitist founders and residents of the project. Of course, in order to continue to draw the people in (at least in this country, or any titled democracy that i can think of) it would essentially have to morph into a las vegas type tourist town filled with all sorts of amusment for the outsiders... this may sound exciting to some, but its none too original, 24 casinos are everywhere, so my suggestion would be to take the city and move it completely from the confines of any pre-existing government.

My thought, far fetched as it may be, is to construct an island (cement, in any large quanity will float) and under the supervision of 'night people' founders, create a permanent ecosystem. (just because the construct is cement, it doesnt mean it has to look tacky...) The people then could claim independence and form their own ruling system, sufficiently eliminating the need for taxes and such, rather relying on a sucessful system of bartering, social equality, and trade.

Of course, considering the average night person, the city would become an omni-tech nest, and whether the intentions of the people were just or leaning towards world domination, it would terrify the rest of the world, leading to total chaos- eradication, or perhaps global war.

er... "24 casinos" should read, "24 hour casinos" excuse the numerous spelling errors-

Mm, even a very small concrete island results in minor warfare. For example, Sealand: http://www.sealandgov.com/history.html

Well all money that goes to government gets spent.
I'd hazard a guess and say most of it gets spent doemstically, for whatever your particular flavour of domestic is.

Governments after all use the monney to buy stuff, which might be services, (Doctors, Teaches, Pain in the Ass clerks, Army Navy Airforce and Marines-We care a lot!) or things, Hospitals, Schools, pain in the ass govt office buildings, bombers etc.

ANd they buy those things off off of private companies for the most part. ANd the peopel thy pay for services spend their money on things and srvices.
Well you get the idea.
In fact where I live(.au) governments put in more than they take out, and we live with deficits.
Hey I didnt say government was smart, just that the money they take goes back into circulation.
