Comments on Sunday 24 February 2002:
Yesterday, the lady was poisoned by some food from a local Popeyes. A place which smelled and looked really nasty, to me; I had gone in with her with the intent of getting a drink, and upon seeing and smelling the vast array of fried-in-advance vaguely-meat products, decided I didn't want a drink from there after all. 'Needing to Popeye' is now a colloquial way of implying that one needs to vomit and... er... otherwise excrete, simultaneously. The lady assures me that this is a nasty, nasty experience. Those who argue that 'health reasons' is not a valid reason to be vegan must now give me an example of someone getting that degree of food poisoning from products that are not in any way animal-based. (The lady didn't actually even eat the vague-meat products, but the fries and biscuits doubtless both used the greasy run-off from the stinky food as an ingredient.) [18:58]

Actually that doesn't really have to do with meat-products, it sounds like the 'health reason' is eating at a place like that. I bet if they sold any kind of vegetable even without grease run off from meat, it would give you food poisoning or the case of the sh**. If I eat meat products I eat them at home, prepared by me. You are insured a better quality and cleanliness that way. And not all farms are huge prisons. I know various products that are created through various small farms that are considered a Co. But the small farms are overseen by actual everyday folks. My uncle is one of these people. He has farmed all his life and never wanted to do anything else. He loves his cows and deals with the ones that have to go. And they don't spend all their time in the stalls, they have beautiful meadows where fireflies come out at night. They moo into the fading light and my uncle goes to bed. Though he is alert in case any cows are in trouble. And my aunt says the calves are her babies. Though she had to say that she would never ever eat veal in her whole life. They work on the farm owned by someone else because they couldn't really deal with the financial stress of their own farm as their age caught up with them. They were very sad and thought they would no longer be able to farm till they found out about the smaller farms to work on.
I understand that there is still gross mistreatment of animals in the world, but it doesn't just happen to farm animals. Dogs have been inbred to fit a type of dog, such as dalamation, pit bulls, etc. These dogs aren't even natural, they were often mistakes that were bred into a pure blood. Then when they were inbred to keep the line on. This leads to many traits involving vital organs to go on and on, making weak animals.
Anyways I support people having free expression and life style. So I don't put down meat eaters or vegans. You really have to go with how your body can handle food products. I've seen people drink grease and be health(never seem like they could do that. They could eat anything, nails, whatever). Then i've seen people try to eat very healthy and be very sickly. So it's for the individual, more than the political statement or moral statement. If we really wanted to save the animals, we would extiguish ourselves completely, because just eating them, isn't the only thing that's been done to them(and a lot of things wouldn't be stopped even if everyone decided not to eat meat).
Anyways. Popeyes is very very nasty. I agree. I'm glad the one on the corner finally closed and that i never ate there!!

oh and nice blog:)

I find this very amusing for reasons that are not at all offensive to Fen.

Rialian
Try sprouts. Documented cases of severe samonella poisoning from them do exist....as well from a number of other fruits such as strawberries.

Well done fen... I would write something simular refering to my own family's past as bovine ranchers but... I can't follow that energy.

I don't understand why people go off on an "animals aren't all mistreated" rant when I ask about food poisoning. Well, I do, but I find it silly.

More relevant point, Rialian, thank you. Interesting to note that I'm quite unfond of sprouts and strawberries too. (and I'd still bet that cases of sprout-poisoning are *vastly* outweighed by cases of meat-poisoning)

Mm, there was a vile bit of Burger King hidden-camera footage on a television the other week, of an employee chortling about a silly customer who'd been worried about whether the vegetarian burgers were completely free of meat and meat fat. Worried at such agonising length that the employee thought it would be funny to fry the veggie-burger in some leftover corpse-burger oil, and watch the reaction.

Basic, obvious moral: Don't eat food at burger places, nor anywhere named after a cartoon character. Feh.
