Novel-writing after midnight is much more effective - with the outside world quiet and dark, and the brain in a funky haze of music and sleep-deprivation, the characters will happily compose the story for themselves, with only my fingers having to partake. On the downside, the characters are all trying to have a happy ending, and fall in love, and nonsense like that, which rather goes against my plan of them being angry and spiteful, and causing armageddon repeatedly. I suppose I might let them have a happy post-apocalyptic world, if they're good.
