Hoorah, research backing up what I've always insisted based on strong anecdotal evidence; that home-schooled people are good - not just smarter, but also more socially and societally competent.

Possibly a flawed study though - can't tell from the summary, since it doesn't say where the sample is taken from. It it was a call for home-schooled people then they'll mostly have got people who are proud of it, which will have skewed the study towards positive. If, on the other hand, they just pulled names straight from some form of academic records or census information then it seems fine. [06:05]

yes, homeschoolers are the best- and i've also noticed that they enjoy learning more if put in "normal" school.

AttackOfTheSpam
Homeschooling, I've been told, doesn't make you any odder or less social than you already were, but I haven't had a lot of experience with those of the homes-schooled persuasion - the only homeschooled guy I know we called Mouse because he was about five feet tall, ran around with his hands clutched in front of him, and chuttered oddly when spoken to. But maybe that's just Texas.

AttackOfTheSpam
Strange, though - one would probably be a lot SMARTER if one were homeschooled, but would one necessarily be more socially competent? I imagine that you might be more polite, more all-around likeable; but wouldn't exclusion from those your age in your most formative years give you less experience when it came to actual life? It seems like homeschooled kids might take things harder than a public-schooled kid, just because they hadn't had ten thirteen years of complete cruelty inflicted on them by the government - don't you think?

Now, if EVERYONE were homeschooled, there'd be no problem - everyone would probably be much nicer. But then, there'd be no swing in political views, which would be bad, especially with the current Repblican trend we've got right now; it would suck infinite ass if everyone just believed what their parents taught them. Growing up in Texas, I was a staunch conservative until junior high, where I was introduced to all the agnostic/athiest kids - that was educational. I'd probably be a Bush supporter if it weren't for public school.

RavenBlack
Mm, depends on the parents to a large degree - if I'd been homeschooled, I'd have been taught to make my own decisions (indeed, the schools I went to were much more inclined towards "believe as others" indoctrination than my parents were, and my parents were handy for breaking me out of that indoctrination as a child). It wouldn't suck if everyone believed what their parents taught them, *if* their parents taught them "make your own decisions".

Do you think "taking things harder" is synonymous with a lack of social competence? Seems to me that it's a boon in modern society. If you don't take things personally, you become the underdog at work, doing whatever your employer tells you for whatever they feel like paying you, rather than doing what you *should* and demanding what you should be getting paid (or what you can get). School trains people to be doormats.

AttackOfTheSpam
Not really - you couldn't afford to be a doormat at my school. However, if you WERE homeschooled and you parents hadn't taught you not to be a doormat, you might be TOO nice for your own good, and end up doing everyone else's work for them on a quarter of their pay. It's a tough call.

RavenBlack
Wrong sort of doormat. You can't afford to be a doormat to your peers, but you're forced to be a doormat to authority figures.

The Dritex
i have to say, with public schooling though, you're able to get the kind of exposure(sp?) to the "crazy" shy people, along with the overly nonshy people, and everything in between, that you don't get in homeschooling.

Unfortunately though, public schooling these days is teaching us youth to me doormats, and not really do anything but what we're told to do. I think though, that parents should be of teh realization that this is happening, and should be teaching their kids to be individuals and thik for themselves.

RavenBlack
From what I've seen, homeschooling means you get exposed to *adult* behaviour, which equips you particularly well for dealing with people when you're an adult yourself. Socially, school only equips you to deal with children and authorities, neither in a good way.

Tom
Why have you got bright stars flashing around the word 'adult', in close proximity to 'exposed'? Are you Mr Jackson's defence attorney? Not at all sure this is a good argument for home schooling. There's even an 'equip' in there.

SpasmodicMonk
Adult behaviour? A large number of the adults I personally know don't actually know how to be adults and are certainly not fit to be teaching children anything.

RavenBlack
Less fit than teachers and children?

James (shades)
Teachers at least are required to pass certain standards (even if those standards are geared towards the public doormat system).

Alas, becoming a parent has only one requirement, and it's not a very hard one.

Gecko
Well my teachers certainly aren't fit to teach. My journalism teacher's major was women's studies

Digi
I shouldn't worry about it too much. We're all going to die pretty soon anyway.

Kitsy
I was home-schooled from half my second grade through my 10 grade.
I absolutely abhored it and do not think that being home schooled makes you any smarter than somone in a regular school. And as for social skills, I believe that I have less because of the years i have missed.I am usually twice as nice/naivete/as innocent as compared to the people at my high school now.I am not complaining, this has given me some kind of experience taht i've/i'll need, but my belief is that We need atleast more social skills than that of a 'home school' gives,in my oppinion.

Jess
I've been homeschooled my entire life and graduated last year. I loved every second of it, being able to learn at my own pace and studying what interested me, not what the government thought we should learn. I'm very socially active and homeschooling helped that a lot; I spent a lot of time with adults when I was a child and I was taught to view everything from an adult perspective. This has helped immensely in the business/post-secondary world. My parents are incredible. :) I'm so glad they opted to go that way for my education!
