Comments on Saturday 21 June 2003:
Hoorah, we are now moved into a house. I have a new monitor, speakers and keyboard for my desktop computer, which arrived inpact - a cross between intact and impacted. A hard-drive had been knocked loose, and had hit the side of the memory, which had bent the memory-socket on the motherboard. Surprisingly, it still worked after the memory socket was bent back; the memory has been moved to another socket anyway though, just in case. The wireless network card acquired for it, however, seems to have or cause a short-circuit - the machine resets suddenly after about 30 seconds of use if the card is in (in either of two sockets) - so that will be going back to the shop.

That's the important part of moving, of course - the computer. There's also some food and stuff, but who cares about that? [07:40]

Starving Africans and Bob Geldof. Maybe Bono. Some other Irish people. Probably not Michael dancin pants.

Wireless network on a desktop? What's the point of that?

I suppose if you don't do a lot of gaming on it the connection will be just as good as wired, but a plain old NIC card is like $10, why not cheap out and just plug it in?

RavenBlack
Plug it into what?

Solistus
A router, I'd imagine... do you have a wireless base station plugged directly into your cable/dsl box? If so, I guess wireless wuld make sense.... it just seems silly to have a stationary computer connected wirelessly.

RavenBlack
No, I have a sillier setup than that; an old laptop *is* the wireless base-station, we don't have a cable/dsl box (yet) so the laptop is doing dial-up, and, being an old laptop, it has two card slots, one of which is occupied by a wireless card, which leaves a maximum of one wired socket, which will eventually be used for the DSL. Thus, number of wired sockets available for network: 0.

Note to self: Don't pay attention to Raven's network structure, it could warp your Microsoft designed and implemented standards...

Anyway welcome to Australia where Broadband is for the elite; only. Also I have to introduce you to the concept of "Download limits", many American's cannot understand this one because they don't have a (Really gay and annoying) Telco that has a full monopoly on the market. (Tel$tra)
(If you are looking for the best plans see www.broadbandchoice.com.au and/or www.whirlpool.net.au)

RavenBlack
America calls theirs "Verizon". They just have an easier time of it because when Verizon screws everything up, you can go with your cable company instead. Here there is virtually no cable.

Looks like there might be widespread fibreoptic coming in a couple of years, though. http://whirlpool.net.au/article.cfm/784

Solistus
Well, not always verizon.... here in austin it's SW Bell, but the brilliant minds who arranged the Bell breakup had the idea of keeping them all in different areas so there was no direct competition... the logic behind this, I suppose, is that inefficient monopolies will benefit the consumer more than efficient ones.

Eps
Raven, you will learn that any advancement in broadband will just be crushed by Tel$tra. Most that know about that fibre are happy that it's out but we know it wont get far just like all the others. (Though if it does, yay decent broadband in au!)
The sad thing is if the Howard government gets back into power Alston will stay in his position and Tel$tra monopoly will stay there... :(

The only bad thing about not voting for Howard is you have to vote for Crean...
