Comments on Tuesday 28 May 2002:
I just got a spam about "super oxygenated" water, with "up to 1500% more oxygen". For those of you unfamiliar with these things, pure hydrogen peroxide (the bleach) is water with '100% more oxygen'. The version of hydrogen peroxide used as an antiseptic is water with about 4% more oxygen, and is quite capable of changing your hair colour with sufficient exposure. I wish the people who order super oxygenated water would get, and drink, what they ordered. [16:01]

As usual I will have missunderstood this. But what they mean by oxygenated, is that oxygen has disolved in the water, not that it's actually part of the water molecules. Although water is made of oxygen, in this case they have just disolved some oxygen into it. In a way that boiling would get rid of it. Hence the big bubbles of oxygen when boiling some water. And what they most likely mean is that it's 15 times more oxygen than the stuff they tested. Which was probably distilled water, with very little oxygen in it. Another thing will be the "Up to" part. that means that certain areas of water (the bits with highest concentration of oxygen) had lots of oxygen. If you wish the buyers harm, then don't risk a wasted wish. Wish that they drink shark tears or something else vile, and or poisoness.

Actually, I thought boiling the water didn't "get rid" of oxygen or break H2O molecules into component O and H atoms. What I thought it did was to break the electron bonding between groups of intact molecules, so you would have vaporized but intact H2O molecules floating into the atmosphere and not hanging together as water. (at least that was my understanding of it). The oxygen amount remains the same. A large electrical blast (like lightning) can alter the chemical bonds and make (for example) ozone (O3) out of oxygen (O2). But it's much harder to alter chemical bonds. As to adding bubbles of oxygen to water without actually altering the chemical bonds and creating peroxide, I'm not sure how permanent that would be. Wouldn't the extra oxygen just float away?

You can dissolve gases in water, to a small degree - like carbonation. The extra oxygen would float away much the same as the extra CO2 does from a soda, I imagine.
By boiling, I think Digi just meant to the point at which it starts bubbling - try it with a carbonated beverage and see how much dissolved gas remains afterwards.

Digi
Indeed I did.
