| Today I was woken by what I thought was my roommates having a loud conversation just outside my bedroom. I was wrong. It was a very loud conversation downstairs. There was no yelling or anger, it's just the ridiculously loud speaking voice that seems to be common in America. Well, there was yelling, from me, which went completely unheard - the implication being that the speaking voice of the roommate is significantly louder than my yell. Admittedly I'm not much for shouting, but even so. He was talking. To someone in the same room. I wonder whether, if I spent a day with cotton balls in my ears, it would be like experiencing being an American. Shouting would sound like talking, and I would probably talk louder due to not being able to hear myself. AND I'LL BLOG LIKE THIS. Maybe it's not obnoxious to every sense in places less urban. DC and Baltimore consist of pure obnoxiety, though.

| Ah yes, the loud people return. We have them here in blighty too as I'm sure you're aware sir. I usually find adorning full goth gear and a severe menace works wonders. Also be sure to take Bob the Bat (tm) to hammer the point home. |

| Well yanks are annoying at the best of times. Specially the tourists... argh! The worst part is i might be going there this year and will have to experience it first hand... gods know how i will survive... not that you care, oh well... *wallow wallow* :P Nice. :D |

| The DC/Baltimore area (actually, the entire East Coast Megalopolis) is a rather obnoxious place to live, in all the ways you describe and perhaps more. It could be worse; you could be in New York or New Jersey. I wouldn't claim to know the general American loudness quotient or distribution, but I must confess that most of my family (myself included) have BIG LOUD VOICES. I blame it on the gigantic ribcages. (And, in my uncle Tim's case, aggravated by something akin to the cotton-ball effect: playing guitar/bass for more than 35 years with no hearing protection.) |
