Comments on Tuesday 15 March 2005:
And now, a random television rundown, because a bunch of television things have amused or annoyed me today.

Advertisement for sunscreen: "The sun can get you when you least expect it." What, when I'm indoors and it's nighttime? What's it going to do, polish the moon, make it slightly concave, and then reflect from it its own rays focussed to a point through our windows? Too bad, sun, the curtains are closed! Take that!

The new phrase that is used far too much in advertising TV shows - "at the special time", eg. "Battlestar Galactica, at the special time of 8:30, Wednesday." What's special about 8:30 Wednesday? It can't be all that special, given how many different times are special according to the TV presenters. Unless they're each special in their own individual way, I suppose. Which they are, in that the world is in a different positional state at each one - wow.

On the subject of new Battlestar Galactica, why is it that an ad for the new Battlestar Galactica is indistinguishable from an ad for 'the OC'? I'll tell you why with an inadequate answer - because the shows are largely indistinguishable too. The real question, of course, is why the shows are so similar, and the answer to that one is that whoever's responsible for the new Battlestar Galactica is utterly lacking in redeeming qualities. What a crapfest that show is. Unless you like The OC, I suppose.

On a more positive note, our TV guide's description of the movie Robin Cook's Mortal Fear - "Joanna Kerns stars in this chilling medical thriller about a big-city hospital where patients mysteriously die. A determined doctor must race against time to find the cause." I didn't watch the movie, because it would certainly be dreadful and tedious, but in my imagination it ends with the doctor slapping his forehead and saying "ohhh! Diseases and blood loss!" The idea of it being mysterious that patients die in hospitals is great. Do the hospitals usually throw people out the window if they show signs of dying? Probably if they don't have health insurance. [04:50]

Hum, maybe they are trying to convert some of their interested in the gosip/solcial lives of fictional non interesting people aka OC viewers into SF fans that would of course depend on mixing a decent SF show with the fictional social crap show and they will probably fail however its a possible motive.

They just want to try to convert those that have no clue about Battlestar Galactica into some one who is cool and understands what IS happening. I suppose the OC can give an okay morality lesson, but the real question would be: How many kids honestly connect to the show and take their advise? And: Does their advise really work?

I like the new BSG. It's a reasonable update of the original series/premise, and gives at least a passing nod to how things might actually work in space.
I have no idea what "the OC" is, because I don't actually watch TV, I'm having the BSG episodes burnt to disk and hand-delivered.

OC stands for orange county which is an area of california right next to Los Angeles in real life also in real life it tends towards mostly sub-urban living and has a fair aount of beach front property. It used to be fairly agricultural but no longer is. In real life depending on where you are living in the ocunty depends alot on your financial wherewithal.

The TV show on the other hand protrays the whole place as a beach front comunity of the rich with an average income of around $4-600k US anually per household and less financially successful people only exist for rare object lessons. It goes on about the social lives of these people the main characters are a 15 year old (maybe older now this information is about a year out of date my little sister no longer watches this show religiously) the main characters are in the later years of high school with their parents in supporting roles.

At least the new BSG can frequently claim to be Science Fiction, as opposed to the old "Science? Consistency? That just gets in the way of our pointless western-with-rayguns shoot-em-up-adventure" of the old BSG.

RavenBlack
So between the BSGs it's "western with rayguns" or "soap opera with spaceships". And a particularly dull soap opera, at that. (Note: opinion formed based on the pilot-movie-things and first four episodes of new BSG; may be subject to change if the show improves half as much as Firefly did after a similar duration.)
